Located in the Goalpara district of Assam, India, there lies a magical place called ' SURYA PAHAR', which means, ' THE HILL OF THE SUN'. It is not just a hill, it is a treasure collection of many ancient stories and spiritual wonders.
While walking through the lush green landscape with a gentle breeze whispering tales of the past, travelers come across many stone sculptures and temples that seems to tell stories of Gods and Goddesses from long back in time.
The stone sculptures which one can see here are carved many centuries ago. These stone sculptures depict Gods like LORD SHIVA and LORD VISHNU. Along with these, visitors can also see many symbols of Buddhism and as well as of Jainism. This magical place gives a feeling of stepping into a time machine and landing in an age long back , where many different cultures and beliefs merge together to create one single breath taking sight.
The local people residing around SURYA PAHAR believes and says that, LORD VISHNU left behind his footprints, when he was roaming in the universe. According to a legend that prevails here, also speaks of a serpent deity, named Ananta, whose coils formed the hills that are surrounding the area, which adds a magical touch to the place.
SURYA PAHAR where as is not just a place where only legends and myths prevails, it is also a great place where spirituality and pilgrimage goes hand in hand. Many people from different parts of Assam and mainland India visit this place to offer their prayers, seek blessings and try to find inner peace in this ancient ruins of SURYA PAHAR.
However, to preserve this sacred archeological site is a challenge. Over the passing years, SURYA PAHAR has faced threats like encroachment and weathering. Thankfully the efforts combined of both, Government and Archeological Department of India are underway to protect and conserve this precious archeological heritage site of Assam, for the generations to come after us.
