Located in the heart of Assam, India, lies an evidence of one single man's extraordinary and selfless dedication towards the environment and nature- THE MOLAI FOREST. This lush green dense forest stands as a living legacy to Sri Jadav Payeng, world wide known as the FOREST MAN OF INDIA.
The story begins back in 1979, a devastating heavy flood washed away large areas of land in Assam. Witnessing the heavy loss of habitat and wildlife, Payeng decided to take the matters into his own hands. With just some saplings of bamboo and a vision, he started planting trees on a barren sandbar along the Mighty Brahmaputra River.
Day after day, year after year, Payeng kept on planting trees and nurtured his forest. Despite of facing many doubts and challenges , his determination remained strong and still. Slowly but steadily, the barren sandbar transformed into a thriving ecosystem. Today THE MOLAI FOREST, named after Payeng's nick name 'MOLAI', is spread across over 1,360 ACRES of land. This man made forest is a home for several different species of flora and fauna, including elephants, rhinos and tigers.
Payeng's remarkable efforts and dedication very soon got into noticed. He has received many awards, including the prestigious PADMA SHRI, which is one of the highest civilian award. But for Jadav Molai Payeng the true reward lies in seeing the forest flourish, and knowing that he has made a difference in preserving the natural world.
The story of Jadav Payeng and the Molai Forest serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that one individual can have on the environment .
